Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is engaged in final negotiations to sell a portion of his shareholding in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

This transaction values Mercedes at £4.6 billion – a record for an F1 team – following McLaren was appraised at £3.5bn in a change of corporate structure in September.

The Austrian executive, who holds one-third of Mercedes F1, plans to divest a stake approximately five percent.

The 53-year-old would stay on as team principal and chief executive officer if the sale goes through.

Ownership Structure

Remaining partners in the team are Mercedes and chemicals giant Ineos Group, who both hold a third of the company.

A Mercedes spokesperson said: "We are providing no official statement on the matter. The management structure of the team stays unchanged, and each shareholder are dedicated to the ongoing success of the brand in Formula One."

Valuation Growth

The deal signifies a substantial rise in worth of the Mercedes team since Ineos Group acquired its stake for £208 million in 2022.

The rise demonstrates the expansion in valuations of F1 teams in the past few years due to the increasing appeal of the sport around the world.

This trend was evident with the box-office performance of the Formula 1 film featuring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which was released in summer 2023 and has grossed more than $630m (£458 million) at cinemas worldwide.

The film represents the actor's top-grossing movie and the most successful sports movie to date.

Current Standings

The Mercedes team are second in the team standings, behind McLaren, with three Grands Prix remaining in the current championship.

Their lead driver George Russell has won 2 of the 21 grands prix this year and is in fourth place in the drivers' championship behind McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

The team won a unprecedented eight consecutive constructors' championships and seven drivers' titles, six for Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, between 2014 to 2021.
