The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Formed By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The late summer uprising was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Consultations Taking Place

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several leading political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
