A defense official has stated that the MoD is currently investigating the potential security risks posed by Chinese vehicles, and personnel have been told to avoid discussing secret matters in all vehicles.
Safety Advice for MoD Personnel
During a recently aired appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed claims that MoD staff have been told not to discuss classified material while travelling in Chinese vehicles.
The minister explained that the ministry is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but emphasised that safety is a concern in every contemporary cars.
We have a fleet of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones represent a tiny fraction.
However whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our staff is not to plug MoD technology into their car, not to have conversations at a classified classification in any kind of car, due to the increasing threats of surveillance that exist in every single automobile, to only have those confidential talks in secure locations. That’s a wise and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about safety.
When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using every Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”
Broader Security Context
This announcement comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese buses, which could enable China to disable buses and bring disruption to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russia spy ship was reportedly shining lasers at RAF pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.
The broader security environment underscores the importance of robust protocols and vigilance in all areas of official operations, from transport use to discussions habits.
