A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” stated the national leader.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose term ended the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in national projects. They were completed at an rapid speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked ongoing apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party urged an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party declared that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
