An individual made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was made public, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of American actions.

Market Movement in Forecasts

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be out of power by the close of the month rose in the period preceding former President Trump declared on Saturday that Maduro had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which became a member last month and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $436,000 from a starting bet of over $32,000.

It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement

Market statistics shows that traders assessed the probability of the president's removal at just under 7% in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.

Yet the odds had climbed to 11% by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the morning of Saturday, suggesting a sharp shift in betting activity immediately prior to the official statement was made.

"That trade has all the signs of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," stated an industry expert.

A handful of other platform users also earned tens of thousands of dollars from bets on the same outcome.

Political Attention Grows

Politicians are beginning to pay attention.

Proposed legislation presented on the start of the week seeks to ban federal workers from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a bet.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in recent years, with traders able to predict everything from elections to current affairs.

Prediction markets were examined under the Biden administration. However it has found a more favorable environment during the Trump presidency.

Insider trading is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the forecasting space.

A spokesperson for a competing service said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
